Description: | WHO SHOULD ATTEND This Academy is for the experienced attorney who has not tried a case in a while and wants a refresher course, or those newer to the practice who want to develop their skills. WHAT TO EXPECT Participants first observe experienced lawyers (see faculty below) demonstrating opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, and closing arguments and then practice those skills in breakout sessions with faculty observation and feedback. We are expanding the mediation component this year and students will see a mock mediation. For the second year, we will present awards based on performances during the Academy. We will have an invited judge offer professionalism insights at dinner on the opening night. In addition, there is ample time for networking with the faculty and other students. COURSE MATERIALS & PREPARATION Participants will be sent a mock case and are expected to prepare in advance as if preparing for an actual trial – i.e., be ready to mediate, deliver mock opening statements, cross examinations, closing statements, etc. during breakout sessions. CLE CREDIT Trial & Mediation Academy offers 25 CLE hours, including 2 ethics, 1 professionalism and 9 trial hours. The registration fee includes one full year’s worth of CLE (12 hours including 6 trial, 2 ethics and 1 professionalism). You may choose to purchase the remaining 13 hours at $4 per credit hour by paying with a check on-site at the seminar. REGISTRATION FEE The registration fee of $495, which includes course materials; 12 CLE hours, including 6 trial, 2 ethics and 1 professionalism; your first year of GDLA membership (if you have not yet been a member); Wednesday’s reception and dinner; lunch on Thursday and Friday; Thursday dinner; evening hospitality suite; daily breakfasts and all-day beverages/snacks.
